A Kitchen Resolution ~
Make 2009 the Year of the Family Kitchen!

2009 is here! Moms and dads everywhere begin to contemplate their typical New Year’s
Resolutions:  Eat healthfully.  Spend more time together as a family.  Save money by
eating at home.  This year, there’s one resolution families can declare that joyfully
embraces all three. Kitchen Kid is urging families to support a
“Kitchen Resolution”: a
commitment to make dinner together one night each week.

1. Early in the week, choose a menu theme (Italian? Comfort food? No-silverware-needed
finger foods?) that will excite your family chefs, and plan and shop for the meal. There’s
no need to be overly ambitious – choose a simple menu that incorporates favorite
ingredients and balances healthy food groups.

2. On the night of Family Kitchen, make sure each family member lends a hand.  From
washing vegetables  and peeling garlic, to sautéing meat and chopping herbs, there are
appropriate kitchen
tasks for every family member.

3. Remember, this meal is much more about the process than the product. So take time,
have fun, and enjoy your too-crowded kitchen -- and the meal you create together!

With a fatter wallet, a slimmer waistline, and a family that cooks-up fun together, a
Kitchen Resolution is one New Year’s Resolution worth keeping.  In the kitchen, children
apply academic and social skills like math, reading comprehension, geography, and
cooperation.  Everyone experiences success and pride with a tasty, tactile, and
practical accomplishment.  And families create new memories and lifelong traditions.

Why? Because meals made together just taste
better!
And because uniting families at the dinner
table and kitchen counter is a proven tool for
raising smarter, safer, and more secure kids.  It’s
also well-known that kids who participate in meal
preparation are much more likely to expand their
culinary horizons and eat what they make (which
goes for veggies, too!)
